Microsoft Edge gets a new share menu in the Canary and Dev Channels

Microsoft Edge

Microsoft has announced that it is bringing a new share menu for Edge Insiders running on Canary and Dev builds on desktop. The new share menu provides users with quick access to the share targets in the way of app icons, which is a very useful way to add one’s WhatsApp contact address or email address to share webpages with themselves or others.

Currently, on this new Canary and Dev build of Microsoft Edge, the new share menu supports only a handful of apps that include Outlook, Gmail, LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, and WhatsApp. Microsoft has also said it would be adding support to more apps on the new share menu in the coming weeks.

The menu works as you’d expect. Tapping on any of the available app options on the share menu would open those services in a new tab with the URL and information. Also, there is an option to copy a link to the webpage itself, similar to the option which is present in the native flyout UI on Windows.

Another convenient option being added to the menu is the “Email to myself” feature. With this, users can save their own email addresses and quickly share links to those addresses right from the browser without the need to open a mail client. Clicking on the saved contact IDs would automatically populates an email with the webpage title in the subject line and the URL in the body. This feature might prove useful for those who do not enable tab or history syncing feature on their mobile devices or use a totally different browser on their smartphones.

As the new feature is beginning to roll out only to Dev and Canary channel builds, the general Edge users would not receive the new share menu right away. Microsoft says that it will be adding a separate flag to Edge Canary in the next few days to force enable the feature.
