Last Friday Riot Games went public with the news that it had been the victim of a major cyberattack that had targeted the company’s build environment. Following a security audit it was later revealed that the hacker had managed to exfiltrate source code for both League of Legends and Teamfight Tactics. It was noted that player’s personal data was fortunately uncompromised according to the audit’s findings.

On Thursday, January 24th Riot Games announced that it had received a ransom email. Though no specifics were given, Riot Games stated in its tweet that it had no intention of paying. The tweet reiterated that no player personal information was accessed in the breach.

Today, we received a ransom email. Needless to say, we won’t pay.

While this attack disrupted our build environment and could cause issues in the future, most importantly we remain confident that no player data or player personal information was compromised.

The hack disrupted update cycles for both games in question, with Riot postponing updates as a security precaution, though it expects to resume regular update cycles soon. Riot has stated that it will publish an in-depth report on the breach detailing “areas where Riot’s security controls failed.”
