Microsoft’s Windows phones get a surprising Xbox update

In a bit of a surprise move, Microsoft appears to have fixed a bug that was preventing Xbox Achievements from unlocking on the now defunct Windows phone smartphones.

The change was first spotted by TA who tracks activity on the Xbox Live service (which is in the process of being rebranded as Xbox network). It’s unclear why Microsoft has decided to reactivate this functionality though it’s incredibly unlikely that this is a signal of some kind of Windows phone or Windows 10 Mobile rebirth, as much as enthusiasts would like that to be the case.

If you’re one of the few people still using a Windows phone, you should now be able to unlock Xbox Achievements and sync them to your Xbox profile. If you still have an old handset and you missed out on some Achievements, this fix should work for you as well.

The fix seems to have been applied on the backend and doesn’t require any operating system or app updates.
