First HoloLens shipments confirmed, could begin arriving today

Noted blogger and author, Rafael Rivera, announced on Twitter today confirming he got an email that his Microsoft HoloLens Developer Edition was shipped. Yesterday, WinBeta reported that the HoloLens Developer invites would go out in waves, shipping every 2-3 months, with the first wave of shipments going out March 30, 2016.

This is certainly exciting news for those that have already purchased their HoloLens Developer Edition units. There has yet to be any official comment by Microsoft if HoloLens Developer Editions are being shipped out to the first wave of customers, but it’s good news that Microsoft is shipping out units and sticking to their delivery timeline.

Applications that are available at the HoloLens Developer Edition launch include Actiongram Beta, Galaxy Explorer, RoboRaid, Skype, HoloStudio, HoloTour, Young Conker, and Fragments. More applications will follow, based on developers’ own applications and games that they create for HoloLens.

Microsoft assures us that this is “just the beginning,” and more HoloLens apps and games on Windows 10 are sure to follow. Apply to order your HoloLens Developer Edition, check out the Windows Holographic Developer Forum and stay tuned to WinBeta for the very latest on HoloLens news.

Update: We reached out to Microsoft for clarification on why the HolLens kits are shipping earlier than the March 30th date, and why some buyers have received shipping confirmations with FedEx tracking numbers but their credit cards had not yet been charged. A Microsoft spokesperson provided a rather non-committal statement:

It’s been exciting to see the response to upcoming shipments of the Microsoft HoloLens Development Edition. We’re still on track to begin shipping March 30th and we will continue to issue communication to our customers to update them on the application and shipment process. For order questions, we encourage customers to call our support line +1 866-425-4709. Visit www.hololens.com/developmentedition for more information on the device.
