Academy Award-nominated screenwriter Jon Spaihts has joined the Gears of War movie project, as reported by Variety. Spaihts is best known for his writing credits on Passengers, Prometheus, Dune, Dune: Part Two and Doctor Strange. Spaihts was nominated for an Oscar for his work on Dune.

Last November developer The Coalition announced a partnership with Netflix to make a Gears of War movie adaptation. With the Jon Spaiht announcement the project moves a little closer to actualization. In it’s statement The Coalition said,

“Jon is a master storyteller with a talent for creating epic, science-fiction universes, and he truly loves ‘Gears of War.’ We couldn’t ask for a better partner to honor our franchise and deliver an authentic story to our fans.”

It's a hell of an honor to team up with @jonspaihts – a talented writer and fellow Gears fan – to adapt an authentic live action Gears of War film with @netflix. https://t.co/OQ3HtpiJkB

Gears of War is a third-person shooter franchise and one of Xbox Games Studios’ most popular IPs. The games feature tactical squad-based shooting, and  are centered around a group of soldiers tasked with fending off a subterranean alien race known as The Locust Horde. Netflix plans to adapt Gears of War into an adult animated series following the live-action film.
