Capcom announces new generation of Street Fighter

After six years – almost to the day – since the release of Street Fighter V, Capcom has finally unveiled the next evolution of the legendary fighting series in a brief teaser video that was released on Twitter.

As many had speculated, this was what the big announcement (the one with the ominous countdown clock) was pertaining to.

Though no actual gameplay footage was shown, the new Street Fighter game seems to eschew the cel-animation visual style of the previous few entries, judging from the cutscene featured in the video. It shows a confrontation between Ryu and Luke, the most recent addition to the Street Fighter roster.

This classic franchise is currently celebrating its 35th anniversary. This year will also see the release of the Capcom Fighting Collection, which will feature 10 fighting games including Hyper Street Fighter II: The Anniversary Edition as well as entries from the Darkstalkers and Vampire Savior series, among others.

How this sixth main installment will look, and how it might take the series forward, we will have to wait until later in the year to find out.
