Starfield was the best selling video game in the US in September, despite being available on Xbox Game Pass on day one.
While Starfield’s success will surely come as a surprise to no one given the hype and anticipation that surrounded the game’s September 6 release, it’s still an impressive feat in a month that was stacked with big releases like Mortal Kombat 1, Payday 3 and NBA 2K24 just to name a few.
It’s also worth noting that this is based on physical game sales alone, and digital copies were not included in the chart below.
Interestingly, Starfield’s sales success seems to go against a longstanding belief held by some in the gaming industry that game subscription services like Xbox Game Pass hurt game sales. Another day one Game Pass release for September, Lies of P, has managed to garner over 1 million copies sold in less than a month.
Starfield is at the time of this writing the seventh bestselling video game of 2023 (in the US)—a year that has been absolutely stacked with AAA blockbuster releases, as seen in the chart below.
