Despite CD Projekt Red facing a lot of backlash for releasing Cyberpunk 2077 in an unfinished state on December 10, the game is still enjoying some good momentum. In a note to investors published on Tuesday, the company revealed that Cyberpunk 2077 had sold 13 million copies on December 20, an estimation that takes into account physical and digital returns.
Last week, Sony removed the game from its PlayStation Store and said that it will offer full refunds to all PlayStation gamers who submit a request online. Microsoft didn’t go as far as removing the game from the Xbox Store, but the company also extended its digital refund offer to all Xbox players dissatisfied with the game.
CD Projekt Red previously announced 8 million pre-orders for Cyberpunk 2077, so 5 million players have apparently purchased the game on PC, Xbox, and PlayStation consoles since launch. The game currently runs best on PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5, and players on the base PlayStation 4 and Xbox One consoles are likely more susceptible to have asked for a refund. We probably won’t know how many did so, but this 13 million sales number, if accurate, already makes Cyberpunk 2077 one of the best-selling games of the year.
Even though Cyberpunk 2077 is already a financial success for CD Projekt Red, the company is not out of the woods yet. It’s likely going to take months for the developers to fix bugs and properly optimize the game for base PS4 and Xbox One consoles, and the Polish company may also need to face some legal action. According to the New York Times, Warsaw-based lawyers and investors in Warsaw are considering a class-action lawsuit against CD Projekt Red for what one attorney described as a “misrepresentation in order to receive financial benefits.”
