June 2013 has come to a close and now it’s time to take a look at how well Microsoft’s Windows 8 operating system is doing in terms of market share. According to new data from NetApplications, Windows 8 currently holds a 5.10% market share, compared to 4.27% market share the month prior.

As of June 2013, Windows 8 holds a 5.10% market share, while Windows 7 retains the lead with a 44.37% market share. Windows XP comes in second place with a 37.17% market share. Windows Vista, on the other hand, dropped to 4.62% in share. This is great news for Windows 8, which is now the third most popular operating system, right behind Windows XP and Windows 7.

This is also the first time Windows 8 has surpassed Windows Vista in terms of market share. Windows 8 was released back in October of 2012 and has seen a slow yet steady increase in market share every month.

In the operating system market share, Windows holds a 91.51% share while Mac holds a 7.20% share. Linux, on the other hand, holds a 1.28% share.

On June 26th, Microsoft rolled out the Windows 8.1 Preview to the masses, which brings forth many features and enhancements thanks to user feedback. Microsoft is betting big on the Windows 8.1 update to boost market share, especially for those who were a bit hesitant to make the move to Windows 8.
