The month of May has come to a close and its now time to take a look at how well Microsoft’s Windows operating system has performed in terms of market share. According to new data from NetApplications, Windows XP has seen a slight decrease in market share as of May 2014, while Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 are seeing a slight increase. Windows 7, on the other hand, has increased in share and has now surpassed 50%.

Windows 7 continues to be the top Windows operating system with a 50.06% share, up from the previous month’s 49.27% share. The month prior saw a 48.77% share. Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 saw a combined share of 12.64%, which is up from the previous month’s 12.24%. Breaking it down further – Windows 8 has a 6.29% market share (down from the previous month’s 6.36%) while Windows 8.1 accounts for 6.35% (up from the previous month’s 5.88%).

Windows XP, which ended support back in April, saw a slight decrease in market share to 25.27%. This is down from the previous month’s 26.29%. Comparatively, Mac OSX 10.9 currently holds a 4.15% share, while Linux holds a 1.62% share. Windows Vista still has more of a market share than Linux, with a 2.90% share.

Windows XP, as expected, has dropped in share, albeit slowly.  Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 are continuing to see an increase while Windows 7, surprisingly, is also increasing in market share, now accounting for 50% of the total operating system market share.
