DirectX 12 on Windows 10

A few days after the bug-ridden launch of the first Windows game to use DirectX 12, Gears of War: Ultimate Edition, Microsoft has released a short sizzle reel to help promote some of the benefits of implementing DirectX 12 over its predecessors.

The video showcases several graphical comparison shots (which genuinely look impressive) as well as a variety of buzzwords and factoids to get gamers and developers hyped such as “unparalleled graphic fidelity”, “up to 20% increase in GPU performance”, “up to 50% improvement in overall CPU usage”, and “the fastest API adoption this decade”.

A large number of Xbox One console games making the leap to Windows 10 PC in the near future will be using DirectX 12 with Deus Ex Mankind Divided, Forza Motorsport 6 Apex, Quantum Break, Fable Legends, and Just Cause 3 being some of the most anticipated.

DirectX is a collection of APIs designed to help computers run multimedia (such as video games) as efficiently as possible. Each iteration of DirectX improves the quality of media processing, essentially creating the potential for better looking and sounding games with each upgrade. DirectX 12 was first announced in early 2014 and is already used by several games on Microsoft’s Xbox One console.
