In a recent interview with MIT, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer revealed the company’s thoughts on the Surface tablet, as well as its success in the market.
When asked if the company was pleased with the sales of the Surface, Ballmer doesn’t answer the question directly but mentioned that it was vital to the Windows ecosystem. “I’m super-glad we did Surface. I think it is important—and not just for Microsoft but for the entire Windows ecosystem—to see integrated hardware and software,” Ballmer explained. When asked if the Surface was a real business and if Microsoft intended on being a manufacturing company in a meaningful way, Ballmer mentioned that the Surface would not dominate in volume, but it is indeed a real business and the company does not plan on giving it up anytime soon. “Surface is a real business. In an environment in which there’s 350 million PCs sold, I don’t think Surface is going to dominate volume, but it’s a real business,” Ballmer explained.
