Plex client software may be coming to Xbox One

You are likely all familiar with Plex — the media server and end-user software that enables cross-platform sharing of music, video and photos. Run the free server software on an always-on computer, and then view your files from pretty much any platform — set-top box, phone, tablet, or another computer.

Now a poster on Reddit is claiming knowledge that the service is coming to Microsoft’s latest game console, the Xbox One. In a recent message, redsadam stated the following:

“I would like to make you all aware of some very exciting news… Microsoft has approved the development of a Plex Client for Xbox One. That is correct, we have been granted membership into [email protected] specifically for the development and eventual release of Plex for Xbox One. This is in no way saying that it will be coming next week, or even next month, but starting tonight I will be applying my first test code to an Xbox One. More details will be coming soon. Thank you very much for your patience in this matter, and thank you very much for your support”.

This obviously is rather unofficial, as it hasn’t been stated on the organization’s official blog. However, Plex has many developers working behind the scenes, and it also strives to be as platform agnostic as possible, so there is every likelihood of veracity to this.

If true, then this makes the Xbox One just that much more appealing as a hub for the living room. We’ll need to wait for more official word to confirm it, but this is reason to at least get hopes up just a bit.
