It’s taken a while but cross-play is finally coming to the popular Overwatch video game for players on Xbox One and Xbox Series X, PS4 and PS5, Nintendo Switch, and Windows PC.

No date has been set for the rollout of the feature yet but a blogpost on the official Overwatch website confirms that console players will need to create a Battle.net account and link it to their console once the cross-play is live.

While cross-play will allow players on various platforms to play Overwatch with and against one another, cross-saving (the ability to carry progress and account information from one platform to another) is still a ways off. This stands in stark contrast to Fortnite which lets all players seamlessly play under the one account on PC, consoles, and smart devices.

Overwatch first launched on PC, Xbox One, and PS4 back in 2016 and quickly became one of the most-popular multiplayer video games during the years that followed. A sequel, Overwatch 2, is currently in development and is expected to feature a shared multiplayer experience with owners of the original game so as not to splinter the playerbase.
