Microsoft unleashes Office 365 for Android SDK for developers to play with

Promising that it “brings Office 365 Apps to Life”, Microsoft today launched the SDK for the Android version of Office 365. This will enable developers to plug their own apps into Office 365 and take advantage of data and various APIs. The SDK is an open source project that comes from the MS Open Tech Hub and should help to promote Office 365 as a mobile office tool.

The SDK is modular in nature and there are three different packages available. The “base” package allows for interaction with mail, calendar and contacts in Exchange, while two others are needed to access files and lists in SharePoint.

There is a strong focus on security, and developers will need to download the AAD Android library Preview in order to generate access tokens to Windows Azure Active Directory.

There are a number of templates available to help with getting started and there are plans to release another SDK that will provide access to the discovery API, although there is no word on when this will see the light of day.

The Office 365 SDK for Android Preview can be downloaded from the link below and is compatible with Android 4.0.3,4.1.2, 4.2.2, 4.3 and 4.4.2. Get downloading and start creating apps!
