Most if not all of us reading WinBeta are likely running the latest version of our favorite internet browser. However, for those of you not yet running the latest Internet Explorer (IE) browser available for your operating system, Microsoft is encouraging you to upgrade and stay up-to-date for a faster, more secure browsing experience. The company has announced that they are slowly dropping support for older IE versions.
“After January 12, 2016, only the most recent version of Internet Explorer available for a supported operating system will receive technical support and security updates. For example, customers using Internet Explorer 8, Internet Explorer 9, or Internet Explorer 10 on Windows 7 SP1 should migrate to Internet Explorer 11 to continue receiving security updates and technical support,” Microsoft stated in an official blog post.
Beginning January 12, 2016, the following operating systems and browser version combinations will be supported: Windows Vista SP2 and Internet Explorer 9; Windows Server 2008 SP2 and Internet Explorer 9; Windows 7 SP1 and Internet Explorer 11; Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 and Internet Explorer 11; Windows 8.1 and Internet Explorer 11; Windows Server 2012 and Internet Explorer 10; and Windows Server 2012 R2 and Internet Explorer 11.
So what does this mean? Starting January 12th of 2016, only the most recent version of Internet Explorer will be supported by Microsoft, based on what operating system you are running. For example, if for some reason you are running Windows Vista SP2, Microsoft will only be supporting Internet Explorer 9. Internet Explorer 8, on the other hand, has been killed off, with Microsoft no longer providing support for the old browser.
