With the release of the latest Windows 10 Mobile Insider preview build 10586.107, Microsoft is also introducing a third ring to the Insider hierarchy of testing. Where there was once the simplistic duality of a Slow Ring and Fast Ring for Insiders to participate in testing both Windows 10 on PCs and Windows 10 on mobile devices, there is now a new Release Preview being added to the mix.
As a refresher, the Slow Ring release cycle consisted of preview builds being issued to Windows 10 Insiders that wanted early access to the new features and updates beyond what was delivered to the general mass of Windows users. Similar to the Slow Ring, Fast Ring Insiders were also granted access to newer builds that held new features and updates but with the caveat that due to its speedy release, bugs and glitches could also come in tow.
The new Release Preview, is being touted by Microsoft as
Best for Insiders who enjoy getting early access to updates for the Current Branch, Microsoft applications, and drivers, with minimal risk to their devices, and still want to provide feedback to make Windows devices great.”
It would appear the newest layer to the Insider Ring release preview cycle is one where participants can test more than just the operating system builds. Insiders on the new Release Preview are now getting access to app updates as well as drivers, which neither Slow or Fast Ring users have had access to during the entirety of the preview program.
We’ll be joining the program and testing the waters here at WinBeta, and report our experiences as they occur.
