Purple, blue, and gold Kevin cubes have invaded Fortnite’s island… and some are moving

Fortnite Chapter 2 Season 8 Kevin cube

Fortnite Chapter 2 Season 7 came to a close last night with a live event that saw players from all over the world board the alien mothership that’s been hovering over the island all season in an attempt to blow it up.

While the mission was a success, the event also saw the betrayal of all players by the new character Sloan, the return of a giant purple cube (nicknamed Kevin by players), and a shocking reveal of seemingly thousands of these cubes being aboard the ship before being blasted down onto the island.

The original cube was a major presence in Fortnite Chapter 1. The mysterious object changed the layout of the Battle Royale island quite a bit and also exhibited dark powers that appeared to corrupt a number of popular Fortnite character skins and items.

The arrival of multiple cubes is a pretty major event for long-time players of Fortnite and there’s already been a bit of new lore introduced about them just one day into Chapter 2 Season 8.

During the Season 7 finale, players managed to revive a dead cube and in the process changed its color from purple to blue. This blue cube is now on the island and has created a peaceful aura around itself which suggests that blue cubes are good and the purple ones are evil.

For those that were still unsure if the purple cubes were evil or not, they’re currently creating dimensional rifts into a parallel dimension filled with monsters. Seems pretty cut and dry.

In addition to the purple and blue cubes, there’s also an enigmatic gold cube on the island which is hinted at being the leader of the purple cubes in a post on the official Fortnite website. Its color could hint at a connection to the popular Midas character though there’s no evidence to back this theory yet.

Much like the original Chapter 1 cube, these new ones are also moving, albeit slowly, across the Fortnite Battle Royale map. The purple cubes appear to be spreading their corruption though it’s unclear what will happen once the gold and blue cubes begin rolling.

It wouldn’t be crazy to assume that Season 8 will eventually task players with killing the purple cubes and then turning them into blue variants though we’ll have to wait and see to find out for sure.

To add even more to the cube lore, some kind of evil villainess can be heard in the Season 8 Battle Pass trailer. Her appearance hasn’t been revealed yet but it’s clear that she’s behind the cubes somehow. She’s also likely going to be the bonus character in the Battle Pass this season though only her silhouette is visible right now in-game.

Fortnite Chapter 2 Season 8 is set to run until December 5th so there’s almost two full months for the current plot to unfold. For now, make sure to read up on the addition of Marvel’s Shang Chi and the Unreal Engine 5 demo character to Fortnite this month.
