Though tablets are popular as cheap, portable devices for media consumption, their utility for the modern digital artist is often overlooked by the public at large. Working in conjunction with ever more accurate styli, models such as the Surface Pro 3 offer a canvas potentially like no other.
Enhancing this promise further is the world of tablet apps, allowing a multitude of possibilities. Coming in all shapes and sizes, these programs can alter the overall experience considerably, often for the better. Autodesk SketchBook is one such example, and is currently a Windows Store App of the Week.
With the ability to choose from over ten preset brush types, including pens, pencils and markers, the app allows the artist a bevy of different options. In addition to this, the ability to zoom in at over 2500% means that works can be altered down to the finest detail, allowing a greater level of perfection for those who seek it. The app is compatible with PSD and TIFF files.
Available in free and premium flavors, the app is open to all for download. Free users, once they have created an account, can access the layer editor and symmetry tools among many other options. Those who choose to take the $2.99 a month upgrade will have access to every feature, including rich layer blending modes, a flood fill and new ruler guides.
