When the Lumia 640 was recently released, Windows Phone fans had something to crow about. With Moto G beating specs, Microsoft’s mobile OS has finally received a budget blower that could help propel it further.
However, according to Microsoft, certain proud owners of the Lumia 640 will be unable to install the Windows 10 for Phones Technical Preview on their devices. This is apparently due to a bug with Windows Phone 8.1 on the affected devices. Given that the Lumia 640 is among the first devices to run Windows Phone 8.1 Update 2, that this niggle has arisen isn’t entirely surprising.
As Microsoft itself stated in its forums,
“If your 640 handset is on Windows Phone 8.1 and has an OS version greater than 8.10.15116.125, you will not be able to upgrade to Windows 10 Technical Preview currently.
I know this news is disappointing. This is a temporary, not permanent, situation. Without going into great technical detail, I will summarize and say that if you are on a build greater than the one noted above and update to Windows 10 Technical Preview, your device would not be able to recover back to Windows Phone 8.1 if you were to encounter any device troubles or decide the Preview wasn’t to your liking.”
Microsoft is working towards finding a solution to this situation, which users should expect soon. Until that time, users are advised to wait.
