It’s been nearly a year since Microsoft impressed the tech world by introducing its Surface Pro 4 and Surface Book hybrid computers during a hardware event in early October. This year, the company will hold a similar event on October 26th in New York City where we hope to see a refreshed portfolio of Surface 2-in-1s plus a Surface all-in-one computer.
In the meantime, Windows Central is reporting today that Amazon has started listing current Surface devices as “old version”. Here is how it looks like when searching for the Surface Pro 4:
Things get a little more confusing where searching for the Surface Book. As an example, Amazon currently lists two similar Surface book models with a Core i5 processor, 128 GB of storage and 8 GB of Ram. The “old model” is currently sold for $1,222.40 while the other one is priced at $1,499 but the store listing seems to be incorrect, hesitating between 8GB or 4GB of Ram (there is no Surface Book with 4GB of Ram in the market, for the record).
So, what does this “old model” label mean? Does Microsoft plans to “pull an Apple” and keep its current designs while refreshing the internals of its Surface Pro 4 and Surface Book hybrids? As Intel recently released its 7th pen Kaby Lake Core processors, this could make some sense. According to Windows Central sources, a Kaby Lake Surface Book (same design, new processor) is being discussed internally.
But what about new Surface hardware, you may ask? So far, nearly nothing has leaked about a Surface Pro 5 or a Surface Book 2, though you may remember that nothing leaked last year as well, which did make the Surface Book announcement even more magical.
Would you be disappointed if Microsoft waited a few more months to release true successors to its current Surface hybrids? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
