Microsoft has just released a new video today that shows how users of a Surface device running Windows 8.1 can upgrade to the latest shiny new Windows 10 operating system. Microsoft has made the process to upgrade to Windows 10 both easy and reliable.
Users can upgrade multiple PCs by installing a Windows 10 installation media onto a thumb drive, DVD, or network share using the Windows 10 media creation tool. As Microsoft explains in the video, the migration process is “streamlined and unified.” When users run the Setup.exe from the installation media, it installs the Windows 10 image and keeps all of the user’s files, settings, and data safe.
Windows 10 will upgrade the user’s computer to the equivalent version of Windows 10 as the previous version of Windows installed. So, for example, if a user is running Windows 7 Professional, he or she will end up with Windows 10 Pro after the upgrade.
Microsoft also wants to ensure that the user’s PC is also safe while upgrading. If something does goes wrong in the middle of the upgrade process, Windows will automatically revert to the previous version of the OS so that the users can try to troubleshoot the problem.
After the upgrade, Windows 10 saves the previous version of Windows in an archive folder labeled Windows.old in the root of the C: drive. So if the users experience problems after the upgrade or want to revert for any reason, they have the option for 30 days to roll back to the previous version of Windows.
If the user chooses to upgrade his or her computer from scratch, he or she can download the appropriate drivers for the Surface 3 or Pro 3 from the Download Center.
