After much consternation from fans online (and an exasperated response from one Xbox exec) Starfield has finally gone gold. But what exactly does that mean? It simply means that the game is finished and has been approved by the publisher to go on sale.
Bethesda has also announced Starfield’s preload dates, and they begin tomorrow (August 17) for Xbox Series X|S and Windows PC via the Xbox App. Players on Steam—where the game is one of the best-selling titles right now in spite of its being headed to Game Pass day one—will have to wait until August 30 to preinstall it.
That installation will come in at a hefty 125GB (SSD only). Which isn’t really such a surprise given the size and scope of Starfield, which will have over 1,000 planets for a player to explore.
Starfield will be playable on September 1 with the Premium Edition’s early access perk; for those on Game Pass Starfield releases on September 6. Before that, Starfield will be part of Xbox’ presence at Gamescom 2023.
