We all knew that Hogwarts Legacy was bound to be a big success. Although the game has been mired in controversy due to its affiliation with author J.K. Rowling—and more specifically, her views on trans people—the promise of a grand open-world adventure set within the “wizarding world” of the Harry Potter books has proven just as popular as one would guess. And then some, apparently.
We reported last month that the game had sold over 12 million copies in its first two weeks. And as reported by Christopher Dring of GamesIndustry.biz, those launch sales were 100% bigger than those of Elden Ring, which was almost undisputedly the biggest game release of 2022. In fact, according to Dring’s Twitter post Hogwarts Legacy is already about to overtake Elden Ring’s lifetime sales.
Last month, UK game sales (digital & physical) are 11% up over last February, and that's due to Hogwarts Legacy. The game's launch week sales were 100% bigger than last year's big title: Elden Ring. It's already on the brink of over-taking Elden Ring's lifetime sales

As we also reported last month, Elden Ring crossed the 20 million units sold threshold just a few days before the one-year anniversary of its release. So going by Dring’s information we can assume the Hogwarts Legacy is also approaching that impressive figure. Of course, in the case of Hogwarts Legacy that figure would be all the more impressive given that the game has only been out for less than one month at present (the previous-gen entries have been pushed back to May).
In fact, Hogwarts Legacy has become the biggest non-FIFA game launch ever in Europe, as GamesIndustry.biz also reported. This comes as game sales overall are down from this time last year across the board.
All of this makes it clear that Hogwarts Legacy is a sales force to be reckoned with. A TV series over at HBO is also in the works, and a Hogwarts Legacy art book and game guide also just went on sale.
Hogwarts Legacy is available for Windows PC and current-gen systems Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5.
