Unthink.com, a new startup that emphasizes themselves as the anti-Facebook, opened up the floodgates to its new social networking site. Launched to the first round of beta testers, Unthink hopes to establish a more open and more honest form of social networking.
“If we want to be free, we have to control our own communications.. we have to claim that power. The number one thing that had to be ‘un-thought’ about social media, is who does it belong to? We need to own everything that we put on our page. We can be as private or as public as we want, as long as it’s our choice,” Unthink CEO Natasha Dedis stated. Unthink hopes to de-throne Facebook’s 800 million users.
The idea for Unthink started when CEO Dedis and her son wanted to sign up for Facebook. Once they read the Facebook terms of service, they refused to agree to it due to the possiblity of the TOS “changing at any time.” Dedis also stated that her son “was really stressed about it, like he didn’t have a choice – he had to be on Facebook. It was either be on Facebook, or be a pariah in school.”
A key feature of Unthink is the ability to choose a brand to sponsor your page, rather than having user data sold to brands. Users will select a brand they feel connected to and then become an advocate for that brand. If you choose not to advocate any brand, you will pay $2 a year.
Unthink also offers an app that will export your photos and videos from Facebook, upon signing up.
Currently in a limited beta, new users can get an invite from someone who’s already in the program, or wait for more invites to be given out.
