Windows Server 2022, the latest version of Microsoft’s server OS is now generally available. This new version marks the end of Semi-annual Channel releases for Windows Server, with Microsoft now being committed to releasing new Long Term Servicing Channel (LTSC) releases every two or three years.
As the latest LTSC release, Windows Server 2022 will get five years of mainstream support plus five additional years of extended support throughout October 14, 2031. The server OS is available in Standard, Datacenter, and Datacenter: Azure Edition versions, and it brings new security, management, and Azure hybrid integration capabilities.
New security features in Windows Server 2022 include Secured-core servers, which use hardware, firmware, and and operating system capabilities to create a secure platform for critical applications and data used on servers. the new server OS also provides secured connectivity by enabling HTTPS and TLS 1.3 by default, as well as AES-256 encryption for the server message block (SMB) protocol.
With the new built-in Azure hybrid capabilities, customers can also leverage Azure Arc to connect on-premises and multi-cloud Windows Servers to Azure. Windows Admin Center also provides admins an improved server management experience with a new event viewer and controls over the new Secured-core features.
Windows Server 2022 is available to download for customers on the Volume Licensing Service Center, but it’s also possible to try the OS in Azure on the Windows Server Evaluation Center.
