A big update is now available for Microsoft’s HoloLens 2 Mixed Reality headsets. Indeed, Windows HoloGraphic version 21H1, which is the equivalent of the Windows 10 May 2021 Update for HoloLens 2 headsets, is quite more substantial than the service pack-like update Windows 10 users are getting this month.
The main new feature in Windows HoloGraphic version 21H1 is the availability of Microsoft’s Chromium-based Edge browser, which will become the default browser on HoloLens 2 headsets. The new browser will offer better compatibility compared to the legacy Edge, and it will also allow HoloLens 2 users to install PWAs alongside UWP apps.
This update also brings more granular controls to the Settings apps, with the ability to search for specific settings related to Sound, Power & sleep, Network & Internet, Apps, Accounts, Ease of Access, and more. Microsoft’s holographic keyboard is also getting support for ‘Swipe to type’, which will provide a familiar experience to customers used to similar functionality on mobile keyboards.
Windows HoloGraphic version 21H1 also introduces a new Power menu in the Start Menu, accessible by tapping the user profile icon. In addition to buttons for Signing out, Shutting down and Restarting headsets, Microsoft has also added new indicators showing when updates are available. Another important update for shared devices is the ability to see multiple user accounts right on the sign-in screen.
HoloLens 2 customers can install Windows HoloGraphic version 21H1 by going to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update Select > Check for updates. For IT Admins, the update can also be installed on a fleet of devices by using Windows Update for Business and MDM policy.
