At long last, newly rebuilt Facebook Messenger app launches on Windows and Mac

A new Facebook Messenger desktop app is now generally available on Windows and macOS. The Windows app was previously available in beta on the Windows 10 Microsoft Store, and the new client has been rebuilt from the ground up to provide an experience that feels more native.

The timing for the launch of these new Messenger apps is interesting, as chat and video calling apps are currently seeing increased usage due to the coronavirus outbreak. Over the past month, we saw more than a 100% increase in people using their desktop browser for audio and video calling on Messenger,” said Stan Chudnovsky, VP of Messenger today.

On the desktop, Facebook Messenger offers free group video calls, synced chats across mobile and desktop, GIFs, and push notifications. The Windows and macOS apps also both support dark mode.

Facebook Messenger has more than 1 billion users, which makes it quite convenient since all your contacts are probably already on Facebook. If you want to try the app, you can download it on PC or Mac with the links below.
