In an earnings call on Wednesday, Qualcomm CEO, Steve Mollenkopf, has confirmed that the first Windows 10 PC powered by the new ARM-based Snapdragon 835 processor will debut sometime in the fourth quarter of 2017.
“We have an opportunity to disrupt the existing suppliers of the PC and the datacentre,” he said. “Our Snapdragon 835 is expanding into Mobile PC designs running Windows 10, which are scheduled to launch in the fourth calendar quarter this year.”
The future integration of Snapdragon 835 was announced four months ago at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas where its abilities to improve battery life and the overall power of a device, and run x86 Win32 apps and games were highlighted. Of particular interest is the chipset’s connectivity which impresses due to its integrated X16 Gigabit-Class LTE modem with 2×2 802.11ac Wave-2 and 802.11ad Multi-gigabit Wi-Fi and is described as “making it the first commercial processor equipped to deliver Gigabit-Class connectivity at home and on the go.”
The new “Mobile PCs” mentioned by Mollenkopf are likely traditional Surface-like products (with the obvious added benefits of the new ARM-based Snapdragon 835 processor) however this technology could potentially also be used in a new mobile phone such as the rumored Surface Phone which many are also speculating could make an appearance sometime in 2017’s fourth quarter.
