Mojang today announced the introduction of the Minecraft Marketplace, a new program which will give players on the Bedrock Engine platforms on PC and Mobile the opportunity to browse, download, and play community creations from within the game. The Marketplace will be released with the version 1.1. Discovery Update this spring, and will also introduce new “Minecraft Coins” which can be purchased with real currency and used to purchase and sell Marketplace content.
According to Mojang, the idea of the Minecraft Marketplace is to give the best Minecraft creators a way to make money from the game, and, “support themselves in the creation of ever-greater projects.” Mojang also notes that the Marketplace will give “pocket and Windows 10 players access to a growing catalog of fun stuff – curated and supplied safely and simply.”
At launch, the Marketplace catalog will feature adventure maps, texture packs, minigames, and much more from well-known community creators including Noxcrew, BlockWorks, Qwertyuiop The Pie, Blockception, and others. Submissions are also open to anyone with a registered business, and you’ll be able to access whatever you buy across devices using your free Xbox Live account.
New “Minecraft Coins” will fuel the buying and selling experience on Marketplace, helping set flexible prices for creators. Mojang believes that it is “super important” for creators to make the most profit, so app store platforms take a 30% cut of a Minecraft Marketplace purchase and creators will get the majority after that.
A public beta for the Marketplace is launching on Android in mid-April, focusing on the Minecraft Coins experience. While there won’t be any creator content in the beta, much more will be added once a full launch occurs later in the Spring. As always, be sure to keep it tuned to OnMSFT for all your Minecraft news and information, and be sure to think up your questions and head to Mojang’s Reddit AMA on Thursday, 20 April, from 9am-12pm PST!
