Earlier this year, at the Build conference, Microsoft unveiled Windows Phone 8.1, the latest update to its mobile operating system. While it was just a point update, Windows Phone 8.1 brought a plethora of exciting features. The operating system was made available to developers (which anyone could get using a workaround) in the same month — April — but the general roll out has yet to happen.
At the Build Conference, Joe Belfiore, company’s VP of Windows Phone, had said that the update will be officially available in June. Today a report by NDTV, a very popular publication in India, states that Microsoft will release Windows Phone 8.1 today. We have reached out to Microsoft to confirm this news and have yet to receive a response. Whether this is true or not remains to be seen. It’s worth mentioning that Microsoft’s product lifecycle page for Windows Phone 8.1 lists today as the start date for support. Perhaps NDTV is a tad bit confused.
Windows Phone 8.1 features the voice assistant service Cortana, which has been very well appreciated by the vast majority of users. The operating system also brings the notification center, Skype integration, and Word Flow Keyboard which brings Swype like features.
If you have the Preview for Developers app installed, you can keep checking for the update by going to Settings > Phone Update and tap on “Check for updates”. You can also tick on the “Automatically download updates if my data settings allow it” option to automatically get the update. General rollout to all Windows Phone 8.1 users will depend on carriers.
