CES 2021: AMD announces new Ryzen 5000 mobile CPUs

After Intel unveiled four new families of processors at CES 2021 yesterday, AMD has followed up today with its own one-hour keynote featuring CEO Lisa Su. In recent years, AMD made some big moves to increase adoption of its chips in the laptop market, and today the company announced its new Ryzen 5000 mobile CPUs that should give Intel some serious competition.

AMD’s new Ryzen 5000 mobile CPUs are based on the company’s new and more efficient “Zen 3” architecture. For thin and light notebooks, AMD’s U-Series chips such as the new Ryzen 7 5800U CPU will offer Up to 16% more single-threaded performance, up to 14% faster multithreaded performance over the previous generation, as well up to 17.5 hours of “general usage battery life.”

The more powerful H-Series chips for gaming laptops such as the new Ryzen 9 5980HX CPU are capable of up to 23% increased single-threaded performance, and up to 17% faster multi-threaded performance over the previous generation. Asus, HP, and Lenovo will be the first manufacturers to launch new laptops powered by Ryzen 5000 Series Mobile processors in Q1 2021, and AMD has also created Ryzen PRO 5000 Series Mobile Processors with enterprise-level security features.

Even though Microsoft’s Chief Hardware Officer Panos Panay made a brief appearance during AMD’s CES keynote today, neither Panay nor Lisa Su confirmed that Microsoft would be using AMD’s new Ryzen 5000 mobile CPUs in future Surface products. Still, the Redmond giant will reportedly continue to offer the choice between Intel and AMD CPUs in its upcoming Surface Laptop 4 to be released later this year.
