Microsoft Teams unveils 4 new updates via Microsoft 365 Roadmap

Microsoft announced four new updates to the Microsoft Teams roadmap on September 20-21, 2023

1. In-meeting Error Messaging 

Feature ID: 167211 

  • Microsoft Teams Meeting users will soon receive direct error messages to help them understand why they may encounter limitations when accessing meeting chats.
  • These direct error messages will explain whether the limitations are due to policy restrictions or unforeseen system errors.
  • Users will have clear explanations for any disruptions in accessing meeting chats.
  • This feature will be exclusive to the new Teams experience.
  • The feature will start rolling out in November 2023.

2. Controlled-Content Meeting Template (Premium)

  • In October 2023, a new template will be introduced for meetings with external participants.
  • The template offers tighter control over meeting options such as lobby access, presenter permissions, chat functionality, and recording permissions.
  • The controlled-content meeting template comes equipped with preset defaults for these options.
  • The aim is to ensure that meetings are more secure and controlled.

3. Automatic Updates for Android-based Teams Devices 

Feature ID: 163598 

  • Teams devices running on Android will receive automatic updates for the Teams app.
  • Manual intervention will no longer be needed.
  • Administrators can manage updates by organizing devices into update phases or temporarily pausing rollouts via the Teams Admin Center.
  • The automatic updates are scheduled to start in October 2023.
  • Platform(s): Web

4. Meeting Protection Support on Teams Rooms on Android 

Feature ID: 161423 

  • Enhanced security measures will be added to Teams Rooms on Android devices.
  • End-to-end encryption will be included in these measures.
  • Sensitivity label support will also be added during meetings.
  • Sensitivity label support will only be available if enabled by the meeting organizer.
  • The update is expected to roll out in December 2023.
  • Platform(s): Teams and Surface Devices, Android
