Last week we reported that according to a report from Okta, Office 365 is the most widely used cloud application among business. The survey was the result of analyzing 4,000 different cloud applications at 2,500 companies in 185 countries.
Now another report is confirming Office 365’s surpassing of Google Apps with an even larger survey of business by cloud security firm Bitglass, via the International Business Times. The report shows that Office 365 has overtaken Google Apps by more than tripling its market share in one year.
Bitglass claims their report uses the largest data set by analyzing the internet traffic of over 120,000 organizations. Of those organizations, 25.2% used Office 365, up from 7.7% last year. Google Apps’ market share has grown as well in the past year, increasing from 16.3% to 22.8%. But Microsoft’s impressive more than tripling of its market share has cast Google Apps into second place.
Bitglass also found that the share of companies using a cloud application for their productivity suite rose from 28% last year to 48% this year. Their report shows that Microsoft has successfully capitalized on the growth in cloud based productivity suite adoption rates to take the lead from Google.
The report also breaks down the numbers to show that among smaller businesses, Google Apps still holds a lead at 22.8% compared to Microsoft’s 21.4%. But Microsoft’s Office 365 has really taken off in larger businesses, where it’s growth has increased six fold. Among businesses with 1,000 employees in a regulated industry, Microsoft has taken a 30% share while Google only holds 15%.
