Meta plans to cut about 10% of its workforce, which equals roughly 8,000 employees, as the company looks to control costs while continuing heavy investments in artificial intelligence. The layoffs will begin on May 20, and the company will also pause hiring for around 6,000 open roles that it had planned to fill, showing a clear shift toward tighter spending and focused growth.
According to Bloomberg, the decision came through an internal memo sent to employees on Thursday, where Meta outlined the timeline and reasoning behind the move.
“We’re doing this as part of our continued effort to run the company more efficiently and to allow us to offset the other investments we’re making. This is not an easy tradeoff and it will mean letting go of people who have made meaningful contributions to Meta during their time here.” — Janelle Gale
Meta’s push for efficiency follows years of high spending on metaverse projects that struggled to deliver results, while its recent focus has moved toward AI products like Muse Spark, which now demand significant investment and resources.
