OpenAI has released GPT-5.5, its latest AI model, and the company says it delivers faster reasoning, better accuracy, and a more intuitive experience across a wide range of tasks, while also moving closer to its long-term goal of building a unified AI platform that handles multiple workflows in one place.
OpenAI introduced the model during a press briefing, where Greg Brockman described it as “a real step forward towards the kind of computing that we expect in the future,” while also making it clear that the company sees this as part of a longer roadmap rather than a final destination. He added, “It’s a faster, sharper thinker for fewer tokens compared to something like 5.4,” which signals a clear efficiency gain alongside improved capability.
Focus on speed, reasoning, and real-world use
GPT-5.5 focuses on practical improvements that matter in daily use, especially in areas like coding, research, and enterprise workflows, where faster reasoning and reduced compute cost directly affect productivity.
Jakub Pachocki said the pace of development will continue to accelerate, stating, “We see pretty significant improvements in the short term, extremely significant improvements in the medium term,” while also noting that recent progress already shows how quickly the field is evolving.
“Super app” ambition takes shape
The release also connects to OpenAI’s broader plan to build a single platform that combines multiple AI tools into one system, which both Brockman and Sam Altman have discussed in the past. This “super app” concept aims to merge ChatGPT, coding tools, and browsing capabilities into one unified product that can serve both consumers and enterprise users.
The idea also places OpenAI in direct competition with Elon Musk, who has outlined a similar vision for turning X into a multi-purpose platform.
Mark Chen highlighted improvements in technical work, saying the model “shows meaningful gains on scientific and technical research workflows,” and added that it can help experts move faster in areas like drug discovery, which continues to attract strong industry attention.
OpenAI says GPT-5.5 is now available to Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise users in ChatGPT, with a higher-tier 5.5 Pro version rolling out to advanced users, as the company continues to push rapid updates across its AI lineup.
