Earlier this year, Lenovo announced the upgraded ThinkPad X1 Carbon 3 (third generation) ultrabook, a laptop designed for business professionals but ideal for casual performance users. Let’s take a quick look at this device and see what it’s all about.

The X1 Carbon (the particular unit we are reviewing) features an Intel Core i7-5600U (2.6GHz) processor and a 14-inch WQHD multi-touch IPS display that runs at a resolution of 2560×1440. The laptop features 8GB of PC3-12800 RAM, and a 256GB hard drive. Powered by Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit, this laptop also features an Intel HD 5500 graphics chip.

Retailing for $1899.00 at Shop.Lenovo.com, this device packs one heck of a punch in a small form factor, so it makes perfect sense for it to be so costly.

The device features an all-black look, with the bottom of the device being made out of magnesium and aluminum. The display features a carbon-fiber and glass-fiber plastic, while the hinges utilize carbon fiber. Carbon fiber is the same material used in the construction of aircrafts and race cars! Definitely a beautiful device. Lenovo actually touts this device as “the world’s lightest 14-inch ultrabook.”

“Thinner and lighter than the first iteration of the ThinkPad X1 Carbon and weighing just 2.8 pounds, this upgrade offers new technologies including 10-point multi-touch display, voice and gesture control that allow for seamless user interaction, and an Adaptive Keyboard that offers almost twice the number of functions of the original ThinkPad X1 Carbon. The Adaptive Keyboard adjusts based on the software or application being used to highlight the most relevant keys,” Lenovo explains.

The laptop also features a “Rapid-Charge” battery that is supposed to last up to nine hours when unplugged, and is supposed to recharge up to 80 percent in less than one hour. We will have to test this out for ourselves and see if this is true.
