Microsoft to launch Copilot email summarization feature in classic Outlook, via Microsoft 365 Roadmap

Microsoft has recently updated its Microsoft 365 roadmap and introduced a new feature for Outlook. The feature is called “Classic Outlook for Windows – Summarize by Copilot,” and it aims to boost user productivity by utilizing Large Language Models (LLMs) and Outlook data. Copilot, which is part of this feature, is capable of summarizing email threads and extracting key points, thereby making it easier for users to stay on top of their emails.

Email summarization is a process in which LLMs can be employed to identify the crucial information within an email thread. After that, a summary containing important details can be generated, which can be a useful tool for people who receive a high volume of emails and need to grasp the main points of each message quickly.

The Feature ID for this addition is 180900, and it was officially added to the roadmap on October 12, 2023, with the last modification also occurring on the same date. This feature will be integrated into the Microsoft 365 Copilot and Outlook products.

This feature will be launched in March 2024, with a preview available from January 2024. This feature will be accessible on the Desktop platform. It will be deployed on both the Current Channel and Current Channel (Preview). It will be available to Microsoft 365 users on a global scale through Standard Multi-Tenant cloud instances.

The launch of “Summarize by Copilot” is a significant development for Outlook users, as it will make it much easier to stay on top of their email and quickly understand the important information in their inbox.
