Visual Studio, Microsoft’s integrated development environment, has long been used by developers in the process of making computer programs for Microsoft Windows, as well as websites, web applications, and web services. A new leak spotted by petri.com, coming from a cached Microsoft blog post, however, suggests that Visual Studio may soon be coming to the Mac.
As the cached blog post suggests, The MacOS version of Visual Studio is planned to be unveiled during Microsoft’s Connect() conference later this month in New York. It will apparently also be a counterpart of the Windows version of Visual Studio, will feature a UX very similar to the Windows version, but will also feel like a native citizen of the MacOS experience.
While compatibility is the focus, the MacOS version is a new product, so it will reportedly not support all Visual Studio project types. It will, however, use the MSBuild solution, which means that developer can share projects and switch between the two operating systems without conversion or migration.
The MacOS version of Visual Studio will be based on Xamarain Studio, which was purchased by Microsoft back in February of this year. It also marks Microsoft’s next steps towards evolving the mobile-centric Xamarin Studio IDE into a true mobile-first, cloud-first development tool for .NET and C#.
