Something annoying is happening on the YouTube mobile app right now, as users report that fullscreen videos suddenly display corner overlay ads that refuse to disappear even after tapping the dismiss button several times. The problem shows up during normal video playback and leaves a banner sitting in the corner of the screen, which breaks the fullscreen experience and forces some viewers to exit the video just to clear the ad.
The reports describe the same pattern across several devices, including both iOS and Android phones, where a small sponsored banner appears in the corner during fullscreen playback and then refuses to go away even after repeated attempts to dismiss it. Some users say the ad eventually disappears after around half a minute, while others say the banner stays visible until they close the video or restart the app entirely.
According to several user reports on Reddit, first highlighted by PiunikaWeb, the issue appears to involve persistent overlay banner ads that remain on screen even after users repeatedly tap the dismiss button.
User complaints highlight the problem
One user described the experience while trying to watch videos before sleeping.
“I be spamming dismiss and it’s just like ‘No :)’.”
Another thread shared a screenshot of a sponsored banner sitting in the lower corner during fullscreen playback, where tapping the close button failed to remove it.
Some users say they managed to work around the issue by force closing the YouTube app and reopening the video, although the same banner can appear again when switching to another video. One iOS user also reported that opening YouTube in a mobile browser avoided the issue entirely, although that workaround is far from ideal for regular viewing.
Possible bug affecting some users
This problem does not appear to affect every user, but it is also not limited to a single region. A user from Australia confirmed the same behavior while watching soccer coaching videos.
“Yep can confirm started happening today in Australia as well.”
A few users say updating the YouTube app solved the issue on their device, which suggests the problem may come from a recent app version. However, others still report the persistent banners even after installing the latest update, so the fix does not appear universal.
YouTube has not publicly commented on the current reports. For now, updating the app or watching through a mobile browser remains the only practical workaround until the company pushes a proper fix.
