Windows 10 Mobile news recap: HP Elite x3 is official, build 14267.1004, and more

Ron

Welcome back to our weekly “Windows 10 Mobile news recap” series where we go over the top stories of the past week in the world of Microsoft’s mobile operating system. Let’s get started.

The HP Elite x3 became official this past week, having been announced during the Mobile World Congress in Spain. The device features a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 (2.15 GHz and 4 cores) processor, 5.96-inch display with a resolution of 2560×1440, a 16MP rear camera, 4GB of memory, and 64GB of eMMC storage. Read more about this phone here. You can also read our little take on why we think the HP Elite x3 is the ‘Surface Phone’ we’ve been wanting.

The HP Elite x3 will be a high-end Windows phone targeted to professionals that will be able to connect to a desktop dock for Continuum as well to a “Mobile Extender” 12.5-inch laptop that will be dependent on the X3 for power. But as the phone will still feature an ARM chip (the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 820), all these extensibility features will only enable support for Universal Windows 10 apps, just like the Lumia 950 currently does. But HP probably hopes that its “HP Workspace” technology will be the phone’s killer feature by allowing users to run virtualized legacy Windows apps. Read more about that here.

Popular cross-platform task management app developer Todoist released a mobile-optimized version of its Windows 10 preview app for Windows 10 Mobile, and our hands-on guy Oliver has taken it for a spin. You can watch it below.

You can now see your contact history in the People app thanks to an update that rolled out this past week. Owners of the Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL were treated to new firmware updates too, offering stability fixes and improvements to GPS and call audio quality.

Microsoft rolled out Windows 10 Mobile Insider Preview build 14267.1004 to Insiders this past week. You can check out the list of what’s new below:

  • We fixed the issue reported by Insiders in Build 14267 where the Lumia 550 no longer charges or connects via USB. If you hit this issue on your Lumia 550 – we have laid out guidance on various methods to get back into a good state here.
  • We fixed the issue preventing Visual Voicemail notifications from happening.
  • We’re introducing Visual Voicemail for dual-SIM devices such as dual-SIM Lumia 950 XL! Work for this feature was in Friday’s release but due to the above-mentioned bug impacting notifications it was not working correctly. But now the experience should be working as expected.
  • We’ve released an update to the People app that brings back the history feature. For a given contact you communicate with, you can view the interaction, whether by today, yesterday, last week etc. Right now, your Skype messages won’t show up in history yet but we’re working on enabling this in a future update. Also – we’re tracking a bug in which opening an email item in history might not take you to that specific email.

Microsoft is apparently working on a Windows 10 Mobile ROM for a couple of new devices, including the OnePlus 2, OnePlus 3 and the Xiaomi Mi5. Last year, Microsoft released a Windows 10 ROM for Xiaomi Mi4 to give users the ability to try out the company’s new operating system.

Did you know Windows 10 Mobile features a handy “cursor controller” on the keyboard? Watch Oliver go hands-on with it below.
