Updated Office apps for iOS bring Excel add-ins and more

Apple Insider is reporting that Microsoft has provided a few small updates for users of the Office apps on iOS.  They include some templates for Word, new layout editing abilities in PowerPoint, and the addition of add-ins for Excel.  Since Satya Nadella announced their availability in March of 2014, the company has steadily increased the capabilities of their iOS Office suite, even for the free versions.

While the strategy isn’t popular with some, Microsoft aims to cement its position as a provider of office productivity solutions – to the point that its newest offering, Sway, has an app only for the iPhone at this juncture. If you’re curious, here’s the full changelog for the updated Office apps on iOS:

Word

New storage options: open, edit, and save your work to iCloud and other online storage services. (requires iOS 8)
New templates: create great looking Word documents more quickly by using one of the new templates.

PowerPoint

New storage options: open, edit, and save your work to iCloud and other online storage services. (requires iOS 8)
Change Slide layout: make your content pop by changing the layout of your slide.
Insert from camera: insert pictures and videos from the camera right into your presentation.

Excel

New storage options: open, edit, and save your work to iCloud and other online storage services. (requires iOS 8)
Excel Add-ins: add functionality to Excel that enhance your spreadsheets and helps increase your productivity. (only on iPad, requires iOS 8.2 or newer)
