Surface 2 update fixes BitLocker recovery key issue

Microsoft has issued an update for Surface 2 users who have suffered a slightly odd problem. Some users found that, apropos of nothing, their Surface 2 would prompt them to enter their BitLocker recovery key. While not a major problem, it is understandably irritating. Now, with this patch, it is hopefully banished for good.

The problem could rear its head when starting up Windows, restarting the Surface 2, or waking it from sleep. Microsoft points out that “these messages may be random or they may occur every time that you try to restore the device to operation.”

Interestingly, although RT was dropped from the name of the Surface 2, the Microsoft Support page refers to the fact that “this update applies only to the Surface RT 2.”

It’s worth pointing out that the Support page also feature instructions about what to do if you do not know your BitLocker recovery key:

  • Open a browser window on another trusted computer or mobile device.
  • Go to the following Windows website: http://windows.microsoft.com/recoverykey
  • Sign in by using the same Microsoft account name and password that you use on your Surface 2 device.

If you have a Surface 2, you can grab yourself the update from — you’ve guess it! — Windows Update.
