From the rumor mill: Windows 8.1 Update 1 very close to RTM, set for April 8th release

Recently we learned that Windows 8.1 Update 1, the upcoming update to Windows 8.1, had reached RTM Escrow. Now, according to a new report, Windows 8.1 Update 1 has reached RTM as of today, with a rollout date of April 8th.

According to a report from Win8China, Update 1 has reached RTM as of today. While we can’t confirm if this is true or not, Microsoft is reportedly set to finalize the update by February 23rd, with an expected roll out date of April 8th. Interestingly enough, the leaker Wzor is also claiming the same thing.

We learned recently that Microsoft will roll out the update via Windows Update on April’s Patch Tuesday, which takes place April 8th. This is also an improvement to the rollout of Windows 8.1 via the Windows Store, which saw quite a few issues.

Now that it has hit RTM, the update will be distributed to partners and OEMs. RTM, for those that did not know, means Release to Manufacturing. There is a high probability we will see the build leak prior to its official release.

Windows 8.1 Update 1 has the ability to detect your hardware and adjust settings accordingly. If you’re using a tablet, the operating system will show the Modern UI. If you’re using a laptop/desktop, your system will automatically enable boot to desktop among a number of other tweaks which make the operating system easier to use with a mouse.

No word on what new features or improvements are present in the newer builds. However, if you haven’t already done so, you can check out our hands-on video of the update here. Microsoft is also expected to talk more about this update during the BUILD Developer Conference, which takes place April 2nd to the 4th.

Editors note: Post updated to reflect that Update 1 is rumored to have hit RTM as of today.
