Nokia has sold its devices and services division to Microsoft, but there’s still a part of the company working on other projects. This may sound a little absurd, but Nokia has teamed up with a Korean carrier SK Telecom and managed to achieve LTE speeds of 3.78gbps. This is fast enough to transfer a 5GB file in mere 11 seconds — if I’m not mistaken, the current LTE supports up to 300mbps at max (LTE Advanced), while most of them are at 150mbps. The demo used combined 10 spectrum frequencies allocated for both LTE variants for 200 MHz of bandwidth.
“This significant throughput achievement is a proofpoint of our leadership in providing the fastest connections and the highest quality for subscribers who use advanced data services,” said Alex Jinsung Choi, executive vice president and head of ICT R&D Division at SK Telecom.
Now, let’s just come back to reality. LTE Advanced is the fastest speed available, which is expected to roll out in some regions soon. At the moment, there’s not even a single smartphone available in the market which can handle this much speed, not even most of the modems which are readily available. It could take some time for the manufacturers to release handsets capable of handling these speeds, but it’s always good to know the technology exists, and is being worked on.
