Microsoft has started talking about its next-generation Xbox console, and the company has now confirmed that the system carries the codename Project Helix. The new device will aim to lead in performance while also supporting both Xbox and PC games, which signals a major shift in how Microsoft plans its future gaming hardware.
The announcement comes shortly after a leadership change inside the Xbox division. Asha Sharma, who recently took over as CEO of Xbox following Phil Spencer’s retirement, shared the first official details about the upcoming console and said she will discuss the project with developers and partners at the upcoming Game Developers Conference.
According to a post shared by Sharma on X, Microsoft has already started internal discussions about the new console and its broader gaming strategy.
“Great start to the morning with Team Xbox, where we talked about our commitment to the return of Xbox including Project Helix, the code name for our next generation console. Project Helix will lead in performance and play your Xbox and PC games. Looking forward to chatting about this more with partners and studios at my first GDC next week!”
Project Helix aims to blend console and PC gaming
Reports about a future Xbox console capable of running PC games have circulated for months, and this announcement confirms that Microsoft plans to bring both ecosystems closer together with its next hardware.
Developers and industry watchers now expect Microsoft to share more details about performance targets, hardware capabilities, and the overall platform strategy during GDC next week. The announcement also raises questions about whether Project Helix will function like a traditional console or move closer to a PC style gaming system.
For now, Microsoft has only shared the codename and a few core goals, but the confirmation of Project Helix suggests the company is already preparing the next phase of Xbox hardware.
