Microsoft showcases IllumiRoom, enhances your gaming expereince

Microsoft IllumiRoom

Microsoft today showed off details and a teaser video displaying IllumiRoom, which is described as “a proof-of-concept system that augments the area surrounding a television with projected visualizations to enhance traditional gaming experiences.” Could this be the future of gaming that we have all been itching for?

What it boils down is that images are projected during gaming that mimic the surroundings used in the game that is being played. If playing in a forest terrain shooting zombies, a forest grows in your living room; if running through snow while escaping Nazi-zombies, expect a winter wonderland; chasing humans in a basement as a brain-hungry zombie, then expect to…I think I have watched a little too much Walking Dead.

In any case, this is all leading up to the next big Xbox unveiling on May 21st. At this event, it is expected that the Xbox 720 (or Xbox Next) will be announced and all the precious details revealed. So far, all details showcase a device that will be a worthy successor to the Xbox 360 (minus the Red Ring of Death).

Check out the below video for an immersive look into IllumiRoom. A very in depth white paper is here with a great deal of techno-babble.
