A confidential memo has been uncovered, indicating that Microsoft is dropping the Windows Phone name, along with the Nokia name, in favor of something much more simplistic. The memo indicates that Microsoft plans to use Lumia and Windows as the new brand names.

In fact, Microsoft will be dropping the “Nokia” branding from their upcoming Windows Phone devices, leaving just “Lumia” as the name. Apparently, the Lumia 830 and Lumia 730 are the final two devices that are launching with “Nokia” branded on the device. Future devices are rumored to carry the “Microsoft” name along with “Lumia.”

The memo also revealed that Microsoft is moving away from the Windows Phone brand name on upcoming devices. Instead, Microsoft will simply refer to new devices as Windows, with a standard Windows logo.

“In fact we understand, from a source with knowledge of the plans, that this is part of the preparation to leave the “Windows Phone” logo behind, as part of a gradual phase out of the Windows Phone name (and OS) which will merge with the desktop version of Windows in the upcoming updates (i.e. no Windows Phone 9),” the report from Geekongadgets.com adds.

We’ve already begun seeing this in recent advertisements and it makes perfect sense seeing as how Microsoft is shifting towards one operating system to rule them all.
