Microsoft Garage expands with new facility at NERD in Cambridge, Mass. – onmsft.com

Microsoft announced today that it has opened up the seventh Microsoft Garage facility at the New England Research & Development Center in Cambridge, Massachusetts (NERD.) The opening comes after several years of hard work, brings new space for innovation, collaboration, and also marks an investment in cultural change.

The new Microsoft Garage space at NERD is designed to create a connection between Microsoft and the local community. There are nearly 15,000 square feet of space at the facility, which is perfect for presentations, workshops, and more. Other features in the space include a “makerspace” where local students and professionals can also book time, with 3D printers, soldering equipment, a metal stamper, and other tools. There’s also a Reality room which is designed for Windows Mixed Reality and HoloLens, and a special space for Garage internship program for university students.

According to Jeff Ramos, partner director of The Garage, the location is a display of how Microsoft has evolved as a company. “We’re a company of hackers, of doers, of makers, with a passion for experimenting. The Garage is an embodiment of that,” said Ramos.

He continued, “Like the rest of the company, the idea of The Garage itself has evolved… The Garage and the annual Hackathon have really changed our ethos so the whole company has embraced the value of experimentation and hacking.”

Anyone is free to explore The Garage at NERD, and a Microsoft badge is not required for most uses of the facilities. Residents in the area can walk into the lobby, visit the coffee bar or patio, or schedule an appointment to use the conference room, makerspace, and Reality Room.
