Microsoft has started testing a new personalization feature that lets users change accent colors in Microsoft Edge. The experimental feature is now live in the Canary and Dev channels and hidden behind an experimental flag, as spotted by Windows Central’s Daniel Rubino.
Currently, the new color theme picker option allows users to apply custom accent colors to the title bar, New Tab Page, and the toolbar. Users can choose one of 14 predefined colors to personalize their browser, including dark blue, pink, teal, etc.
If you’re an Edge Insider, you need to be running the latest Canary or Dev build of Microsoft Edge to use this feature. To enable accent color themes support in the browser, follow these steps:
- Head to edge://flags and enable the “Enable picker for color based themes” flag and restart the browser.
- With the flag enabled, go to the Appearance section in Settings. From here, you can choose your favorite accent color to customize the default Microsoft Edge theme.
- As soon as you select a color from the palette, the Edge’s toolbar and tabs will automatically adapt your chosen hue.
The accent color feature in Edge differs from Chrome’s new color options, as it doesn’t include an eyedropper tool so users can pick any color from their desktop background. As of this writing, the color options are limited to only a handful of choices.
Again, custom themes are still a work in progress and are currently only available in the Canary and Dev builds of Edge for Windows, macOS, and Linux. We hope that the company will add more options before it starts rolling out to the public.
